I just upgraded to Keyshot 2024 from Keyshot 11, and I keep losing work because colors are linked in a new weird way.
One problem I have is when I duplicate a material and change the color in multi-materials, the original material also updates to the new color. So instead of 2 different color options of the same material, I have 2 identical multi-materials.
Another problem I have is when I want a component to be a different value of a saved color swatch. I will select the color swatch and adjust the value, and it affects all components that had the original color instead of just the component I am working on.
I am a CMF designer, and this linking makes Keyshot unusable for me. Is there any way to disable this feature? I cannot downgrade because I will be unable to share files with my team.
That a weird behaviour of the multi-material tool. Can you post a screenshot of your material graph ?
In KS2024, you can play with a new color scheme tool that is quite nice, even if it’s a bit tricky to handle at first but it’s worth as cmf designer.
I tried changing the name of each new material, but both the color and the material name would update on the previous material as well. Instead of a multi-material I end up with one material duplicated a bunch of times, and no way to save multiple color concepts
As part of 2023.3 we introduced a lot of new concepts to the color workflow in KeyShot Studio.
Among these is the concept of linking colors. In essence this means that across materials, a color can still be linked, and modifying it in one location will be reflected on both materials.
Color linking is based on the name of the color. Entering the same name in two different color properties will link the colors.
This is the feature that is causing you some trouble, because duplicating a sub-material of course also keeps the color linking.
To unlink a color, the easiest is to click the ‘+’ sign next to the color name.
We’re continuing to monitor feedback on these new features, and already now have plans to improve these. Especially visibility of linked colors is high on our priority list, as we feel that it is currently too hidden.
@philip.rasmussen thank you for quick response and the clarification. I can see how linking colors could be helpful, but adding an extra step every time I create a new color definitely slows down my workflow as a color designer.
I wonder if there’s a way to provide an option for customizing the default color behavior. I would love to revert to my old (faster) workflow, but people who benefit from this new workflow could choose that as their default instead. Looking forward to seeing the future updates!
